What is Public Liability insurance?
Public Liability will cover your legal liability should a third-party be injured, or third-party property be damaged, through your negligence whilst training a client or engaging in your insured sport, and then that third-party wanted to sue you. This covers costs like compensation, court fees and solicitor fees. The injury or damage needs to have occurred during a match or training session that you took part in.
Below are four examples of why you might need Public Liability Insurance:
Example 1 - You’re coaching or instructing someone, and they injure themselves. They hold you responsible for their injuries and make a claim against you.
Example 2 - You’re playing as an athlete (for instance, in tennis), and you seriously injure another player, who then brings legal action against you.
Example 3 - You’re a personal trainer, and the client you’re training damages gym equipment that doesn’t belong to you during one of your sessions. You’re held accountable, and a claim is made against you by the owner of the equipment.
Example 4 - You leave a kit bag lying around, and someone trips over it and hurts themselves. They hold you responsible for their injuries and make a claim against you.
What is Professional Indemnity insurance?
Whenever you take out Public Liability insurance with Insure4Sport, you also get Professional Indemnity cover included for free. This protects you if a client or participant claims that your advice or guidance caused them injury or financial loss.
For example, if you showed someone how to use a piece of equipment incorrectly and they later injured themselves while training alone, they could try to sue you for negligent advice — and this cover would support you.
Professional Indemnity also protects you against breaches of professional duty, such as defamation, confidentiality issues, or mistakes that lead to a client suffering financial loss.
Examples include:
- A work laptop containing sensitive information being stolen
- Accidentally sending confidential business details to the wrong client
